Super Bowl Prop Bets 2023: Odds for craziest exotic props, from coin toss to commercials to Gatorade shower color

For the tens of millions of fans who bet on football, Super Bowl 57 between the Chiefs and Eagles presents countless money-making opportunities and the last chance to bet on the NFL before the 2023 season kicks off seven months from now. For the vast majority of viewers tuning into the big game, however, Super Bowl Sunday is more about fun and entertainment. If you fall more into column B, you might be interested to know that you can engage in all sorts of fun prop bets between now and game day, many of which don’t even require any football-related knowledge. These props, often referred to as “exotics,” can liven up your Super Bowl party and help even the most casual pigskin fans get a little betting action in.

“Exotic” or “novelty” props basically just mean props that aren’t necessarily tied to a specific sport. In the case of the Super Bowl, you can bet on exotics related to the National Anthem, halftime show, and the game broadcast itself, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Football fans looking to get even more wild and crazy can even wager on the coin toss, commercials, and the color of the Gatorade showered onto the head coach of the winning team.

Only in America would millions of people bet on such ridiculous things. Our collective love for the biggest individual sporting event in the United States knows no bounds, and therefore games within the games have become a part of the fun festivities of Super Sunday. Even those who don’t want to wager on any exotics can have fun with them, printing out a prop list for each member of their viewing party and giving out a prize to whoever gets the most correct.

That might be the best way to play the exotic prop game, especially considering the majority of licensed sportsbooks in the U.S. don’t offer them. You can usually find them on offshore books not federally licensed or authorized, but remember that “offshore,” “unlicensed,” and “unauthorized” are fancy ways of saying “illegal.” You might be better off drawing exotic prop inspiration from us so you can create your own non-betting prop contest. We will be sure to mention whether we found each highlighted novelty prop on a legit U.S. book, such as BetMGM, Caesars, FanDuel, or DraftKings, and which props can only be found offshore.

Are you ready for some props? Let’s dive into the vast array of crazy exotic props you can select from on Super Bowl Sunday, briefly discussing each one and helping you decide which way should lean.

Super Bowl 57 Prop Bets: Coin toss (BetMGM)

What will the coin toss land on?

Heads -105
Tails -105

Four of the past five Super Bowl coin tosses have landed ‘heads,’ but that comes after a four-year run of ‘tails’ never failing. Before that, ‘heads’ had a five-year winning streak. Will ‘heads’ continue to build on its dominant 9-5 run since Super Bowl 43 in 2009? Or will ‘tails’ bounce back (so to speak), and avoid falling five flips below .500 in 15 years?

Your financial advisor might tell you that betting on a literal coin flip is not the sagest financial decision, but money management is a Monday conversation. Millions of people bet on ‘red’ or ‘black’ at roulette wheels each day despite having just a 47.4 percent chance of hitting one color or the other (standard American roulette wheels feature 36 red/black spaces for every two green). Picking ‘heads’ or ‘tails’ is literally a 50/50 even proposition, so you go in with better odds to win than roulette enthusiasts.

Like Austin Powers, I like to live dangerously. I also like to buck trends and pick one side when they are ‘due’ to bounce back. Therefore, I’ll be going with tails. No way can tails fail for the 10th time in 15 Super Bowls, right? Go with your gut, people — luck is allergic to me.

BetMGM also allows you to bet on which team will win the coin toss (-105 for both the Chiefs and Eagles), and many sites let you bet on whether the team that calls the coin toss will be correct (also typically -105 odds for each side). Again, these are literal coin flips, so there’s no need to overthink them.

Will either team win the coin toss and win the game? (DraftKings)

No
Chiefs

Eagles

-330

Teams that win the coin toss are 24-32 in Super Bowl history. That includes an 0-8 mark in the past seven Super Bowls and a 3-9 mark over the past 12. Does that mean anything for Super Bowl 57? Of course not, which is why the odds are even. Still, it’s fun to break out those numbers and sound smart at a party, right?

Super Bowl 57 Prop Bets: Gatorade shower (BetMGM)

Color of liquid poured on the winning coach:

Orange +250
Yellow/Green +350
Clear/Water +500
Blue +500
Red/Pink +550
Purple +900
No Gatorade Poured +1600

Since 2001, the color of “liquid” poured on the winning coach has been: Orange (5), None (5), Blue (4), Clear (4), Yellow (3), Purple (1).

Blue Gatorade (or Powerade?) has been poured in each of the past two years and three of the past four, but oddsmakers clearly want to limit their liability with orange, the color of the liquid poured over Andy Reid in 2020 when Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs last won it all. Orange would also be another little ‘up yours’ to the Bengals, the squad that provided some bulletin board material before being eliminated by Kansas City in the AFC championship.

Since I backed the Chiefs in my best bets column, I’m leaning orange. But players tend to love yellow, and clear/water is always a decent wild card. Since there’s no midnight green-colored Gatorade, you might be wise to stick with blue if you’re backing the Eagles.

Or, if you think the game will come down to the wire — or maybe think that Reid will instruct his players not to shower him this time around now that he’s 64 — maybe the play is ‘no Gatorade poured.’ Three of the past four ‘no Gatorade poured’ Super Bowls came after Patriots victories. Good old curmudgeonly Belichick!

Super Bowl 57 Prop Bets: Postgame, MVP speech (FanDuel?)

(Getty Images)

What will be mentioned first during the Super Bowl MVP speech?

Team/teammates -120
City/fans +325
God/religion +370
Family +690
Coaches +1200
Team Owner +2500

We can’t currently find this novelty prop, but rumor has it that FanDuel and FanDuel Canada have both featured it and should have it back up between now and the big game. I always tend to lean ‘team/teammates’ for this one, as real MVPs give the credit to the players around them for collectively rallying to victory. Patrick Mahomes credited his squad when he and the Chiefs last won it all and he was named SB MVP, but if either squad’s ravenous (and well-traveled) fans show up in a major way to Glendale, they could be worthy of the first shout-out. If we have a deeply religious MVP, we may be giving credit first and foremost to the Lord and Savior.

If you can’t quite decide leading up to the game, betting a little money on each of those three options might make sense. You could still win a little if you were strategic enough about bidding and potential payouts, but if you’re strictly picking the most likely option for a party prop contest, team/teammates seems like the way to go.

Will a player propose after the game?

Yes +400
No -650

Obviously, this is unlikely, but with the game taking place two days before Valentine’s Day, it seems more possible than in the past. The true romantics will take a stab on ‘yes’ here.

Super Bowl commercials prop bets (Bovada — offshore)

Which chip company commercial will air first?

Doritos -130
Pringles +100

Both these companies typically make a big splash in the Super Bowl commercials market, but we tend to remember Doritos making its biggest appearances closer to before and after the halftime show. Pringles is always a dark horse to have one of the better ads of the night, and we’re taking them with plus odds to also air before Doritos. Great, now I want a Pringle.

Which snack company commercial will air first?

M&Ms -150
Doritos +150

Now we’re getting plus odds for Doritos, which we love, but this could be a trap, as M&Ms always seems to make an early appearance during Super Bowl commercial breaks. How early will those creepy chocolate-candy people grace our high-definition screens? Great, now I want some caramel M&Ms. The gluttonous urges have begun!

Which beer brand commercial will air first?

Budweiser -115
Heineken -115

Both of these companies have iconic Super Bowl commercials each year, but it was Budweiser that stole the show during Super Bowl 56 with its triumphant return of the Clydesdales. Maybe Heineken has something up its sleeves to bounce back as best big-game beer marketer considering its recent run of strong advertisements including the Daniel Craig ‘Bond’ commercial in 2021. We would lean toward Heineken here, as they recently unveiled their new zero-alcohol beer and will likely look to get the word out to the estimated 100 million viewers.

These are just a taste of the Super Bowl commercial props listed so far. Plenty more can be found, and with enough research, you can already get a good idea of an answer to some, such as who will appear first in a certain commercial or how many will feature dogs, celebrities, or celebrity dogs. Just remember, make your prop contest just for fun if it’s not listed on a legal, regulated sportsbook!
