The Netherlands will be seeking a convincing victory against hosts Qatar in their Group A finale, as the Dutch target winning the group, and securing, what on paper, should be a more favorable matchup in the Round of 16.
La Oranje are not yet mathematically qualified for the knockouts, but going into the final match they sit joint top of the group with Ecuador, ahead on the disciplinary points tiebreaker (fewest cards). The Group A winner will likely dodge a date with England in the last 16, instead landing the second-place team (USA, Iran or Wales barring any surprises).
Qatar, who are already eliminated after losing both matches, are a mismatch against a Dutch team which is currently on a 17-match unbeaten streak. However, Louis Van Gaal’s side have not blown anyone away in Qatar, with Cody Gakpo’s goal easing them through.
If the Netherlands beat Qatar, they will finish top of Group A, if Ecuador fail to beat Senegal. But if the South Americans also win, they would finish level on points and group tiebreakers come into play.
