While the main event may have been altered, the UFC will look to entertain fans all over the world with UFC 274. The event takes place on May 7 from inside the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona.
In the main event, Charles Oliveira and Justin Gaethje fight for the UFC lightweight title. Oliveira joined the UFC in 2010. He beat Michael Chandler at UFC 262 to win the UFC lightweight title. At UFC 269 in December, he beat Dustin Poirier via submission to defend the belt.
Gaethje, a World Series of Fighting lightweight champion, made his MMA debut in 2011. All but one of his wins in the UFC have been via some form of knockout. “The Highlight” is coming off a violent affair against Chandler at UFC 268 in November. Gaethje won the fight via unanimous decision.
During the weigh-ins, Oliveira missed weight and was stripped of the title. Only Gaethje can win the title on Saturday.
The second title fight will be between Rose Namajunas and Carla Esparza. Namajunas made her pro debut in 2013. Joining the UFC in 2015, she shocked the world by beating Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 217 to become UFC strawweight champion. She lost the title against Jessica Andrade, beat Andrade in a rematch, and reclaimed the belt against Zhang Weili in April 2021. In a rematch in November, Namajunas beat Zhang to retain the title.
A silver medalist in the 2013 Pan American Jiu-Jitsu Championships, Esparza made her pro debut in 2010. Competing for Bellator, XFC, and Invicta, Esparza is a former Invicta FC strawweight champion. She would beat Namajunas in 2014 to become the first UFC strawweight champion.
Losing the title to Joanna in 2015, Esparza has gone 8-3 since then and is now on a five-fight win streak. Her last bout was a TKO win in May 2021 against Yan Xiaonan.
